How many of you are ready for Thanksgiving this year? The question of thought is: “How does a dapper gentleman prepare for Thanksgiving?” Well guys we are breaking away from our Budget Series this once to bring you a special article on Thanksgiving. I’m sure every Thanksgiving seems to be the same old cycle for you every year. You show up at a family member’s house, wearing some semi-uncomfortable outfit while carrying some store-bought pumpkin pie. Once you arrive, you greet all the family members and meet up with awkward relatives you hardly see. Eventually you find yourself scouting out the kitchen like an assassin looking for his next target, making sure there is food at this dinner that you’ll actually enjoy.
How about you turn that same-old Thanksgiving this year in a dapper gentleman’s Thanksgiving?! Guy’s you have the power to change things up this year no matter where you’re attending. We have a few simple ideas to make your 2014 Thanksgiving more dapper than ever. Sit back, take notes, and prepare to apply the following.
The Thanksgiving Outfit. First of all gentleman leave the “stretchy” pants at home this year. If you have plans of gorging on turkey and pie this year you can forget it. Eating like a gentleman starts with dressing like a man. No “stretchy” pants! First, dress so you’re comfortable, but don’t wear sweat pants. We encourage you to consider wearing some fall colors to your Thanksgiving feast such as maroon, tan, dark green, mustard yellow, and brown. You don’t need to wear a tie, but add a sweater or a cardigan to your wardrobe. Finish off you ensemble with some fun colored socks since you’ll probably have to take your shoes off at the door. Trust me they’re a good conversation starter.
Beverage of Choice. Stop settling for Aunt Sally’s punch and the odd selections of diet pop and coffee this year. Be a gentleman who saves the party by bringing some beverages that complement the food. Please don’t grab a random bottle of wine at the liquor store on the way to the family or friend’s house. A dapper gentleman is thoughtful and considerate. Make the extra effort and call a day ahead of time and ask what is on the menu for Thanksgiving. Then do a little research and find out what kind of wine will pair nicely with turkey or pasta. If you’re looking to be slightly different, then consider bringing some of these beers to Thanksgiving: Goose Island Pere Jacques, Chimay Premiere, or Brooklyn Brewery Local 2.
Creative Desserts. No offense, but pumpkin and apple pie can be a bit boring year after year. This time choose to be the hero of the dessert after dinner. A dapper gentleman should be able to be creative and think outside the box. Instead of joining everyone at the table for dessert, bring the dessert to the table this year. Have you considered crafting a Scotch Basket? Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Why not spend time after dinner relaxing together sipping and tasting some age-old quality Scotch that will warm you from the inside out? Guys get creative and construct a nice basket lined within linens, scotch glasses, and a nice bottle of Scotch. Then brush up on your Scotch tasting skills and present everyone with a dram of Scotch after dinner. It’s a great way to warm up and by displaying your “Scotch knowledge” you’ll turn that Thanksgiving dinner to something epic. If you don’t want to spend too much financially on a bottle of scotch, then consider beer for dessert such as: Brooklyn Brewery’s Black Chocolate Stout, Founder’s Breakfast Stout, or Willoughby’s Peanut Butter Cup Coffee Porter.
If You’re the Host. If you happen to have the honor of hosting Thanksgiving at your house this year, then this is for you. It’s good to maintain a lot of tradition for the holidays such as carving turkey and having all the fixings, but take it to the next level of dapper by being creative. Create an atmosphere of celebration and enjoyment by playing jazz music. I recommend the album “Jazz Around the World by Putumayo.” Now let’s take it to the next level of by having a mini bar set up with appetizers an hour and thirty minutes prior to the main course. Next, set up the dining table with specialized features such as personalized place settings. These little elements can make it more special. Finally, consider having some form of party favors for when your guests depart.
Gentlemen please have a safe and happy Thanksgiving. In the meantime we would love to hear from you. What ideas did you like? What ideas do you plan on following?
